Read: Nehemiah 1; Psalm 97

The Israelites were exiled from their land. They have sinned and God punished them by sending a foreign nation to subdue them, plucking them out of their homes and placing them in a land which they would be serving a tyrant. Sin has indeed, consequences. This is the background of Nehemiah. Chapter one speaks of the report in which Nehemiah was hearing. The walls of Jerusalem lies in ruins. People don’t have any protection. Nehemiah then came to pray and acknowledge their sinfulness.

So what can we learn from the prayer of Nehemiah?

God is powerful and amazing. When we commit sin against God, it has a consequence. Checking out what the psalmist said…

O you who love the Lord, hate evil!
He preserves the lives of his saints;
he delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
Psalm 97:10

God is marvelous and amazing. He can preserve us and deliver us from the wicked. But He also hates evil. That is why we should be extra sensitive and guard our hearts against sin since we know what is right and wrong. We should do our best to dwell in His presence for in Him we will find security.

Is there any sin in your life that you need to give up? Confess it to God. Sin has consequences. Don’t allow sin to damage the relationship between you and God, who could deliver you and preserve you.
