Food Selfie

Posted: September 20, 2014 in thought to ponder
FoodI have a confession to make. I am one of those who would take a food selfie. That means I take a picture of the food before I eat it. That is because I would like to remember the goodness, the richness of the food, if it was as good as it looks. It would be mouth watering but at the same time, I would be able to make it a conversational topic when people would ask where it would be good to eat with a limited budget (as a student, our budget is really limited so we are creative in looking for good deals!). During a seminar on leadership, the speaker, Daniel Foo, a Singaporean pastor, mentioned about leaders, that we need to take time to eat food for our soul. Are we feeding our souls as much as we feed the physical body? The Word of God is something we need to indulge in every day.

The word of God is similar to honey. The psalmist said…
How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Psalm 119:103
We know that honey is one of the “health foods”. It is a better alternative to sugar as it is natural and not processed. It has lots of health benefits such as a cure for a bad hangover, heals wounds faster, removes sores, and other ailments. The Word of God is similar to honey that is actually a cure for lot of headaches! Whenever I read the Psalms, I could feel the emotion of the psalmist. Indeed, some of the messages are sweet. It is not just like honey. The word of God is also like milk. The Apostle Peter said…
Like newborn infants,
long for the pure spiritual milk,
that by it you may grow up into salvation
1 Peter 2:2
Milk is satisfying for infants. It is the only food they can take and swallow. When we are young in our walk with the Lord, we can drink all the milk we can. Even as adults, we are supposed to take milk to strengthen our bones. Similarly, we take the word of God to be able to fully experience the goodness of God. We read and see who God is, and when God shows himself through our situation, through moments of victories, through the times of success, we can indeed say “taste and see that God is good!” Even in the wilderness experience, God’s goodness is seen. The Word of God is not only about the goodness of God. It is something we need to digest everyday. Which leads to the third food that the Word of God is similar to. It is liken to bread. Jesus used it to fight temptation when he said…
But he answered, “It is written,
“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Matt. 4:4
We need to digest the word of God daily. Just like eating for physical strength, we take the Word to feed our souls. We read daily, and we meditate in a sense that we think of it. What does it mean? How do we apply this in our life? Who is God in the picture?
Lastly, the Word of God is similar to meat. The writer of Hebrews said…
But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
Heb. 5:14
Solid food. Meat. Protein. This kind of food helps our body build muscles. Likewise, the Word of God develops spiritual muscle we can call discernment. It helps us to know what is good and what is evil.

So what food are you taking for your soul daily? Don’t settle for crumbs. Eat bread, meat, and honey. Drink milk and enjoy the word of God!
