Trust. Delight. Commit.

Trust in the LORD, and do good;
Dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord
And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your ways to the LORD;
Trust in him, and he will act.
Psalm 37:3-5

The verbs used in this psalm seem to be in progression. First, it’s trust, then delight, then commit.

To trust is to put the full weight of the body, to rely totally, to surrender and yield to the Lord. Then, the psalmist encourages us to delight in the Lord for sometimes, we trust with an unyielding heart, or a quarreling spirit. Trust involves giving a 100% to God, a whole hearted devotion. When we trust God, we can do good (or acts of service) because our actions would speak of how we trust God.

After we put our trust in Him, we can learn how to be delighted. What are the things that make us smile? What are the things we enjoy doing? We should delight ourselves not in the ministry or the happenings at church, or the company we are in, we should delight ourselves in the Lord. If we find ourselves enjoying the service more than who we are serving, we are in trouble. When we delight in the Lord, our desires change. We would long for the things that God wants. The desires of our heart changes because we would long for the things that pleases our Lord, hence, He will give the desires of our hearts.

Finally, commit. To commit is to put into mind that at the end, whatever we do, we are accountable to God. To be accountable to Him. To yield our all including our ways (and plans, goals, desires) and allow Him to make changes or discard totally our plans (if He wishes to do so). To commit means to partner with God and say ‘Lord, I trust you, here are my plans and goals, but it’s your will I seek to follow’.

Trust in Him, and He will act. Our God is a God who is involved in our lives, including our love lives, including our businesses, our activities. He is Immanuel, God with us. He is concerned with our day to day activities. So trust Him, delight in Him, Commit your ways to Him.
