Only God deserves our worship

Acts 17:24-25
“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.”

Paul was in Athens and his heart was distressed because the city was full of idols. Day by day, he spoke in the synagogue as well as the marketplace declaring the good news about Jesus and the resurrection. It was when the people brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus (Greek council) that he spoke the words above.

I think Paul emphasized God’s Sovereignty and Omnipotence to the Greeks because they are notorious for having a lot of gods and goddesses. There are a lot of religions that worship a lot of gods and/or saints but, for me, the main point is the misdirection of worship that only God deserves. And it’s not even about the physical idols that we have, we should guard our hearts with the intangible things that cause us to fall to sin easily. For me, it’s worrying — I like to overthink things which only serve to give me a surly mood which in turn makes me lose my temper over the littlest disturbances. I have learned to counter that by reading the Bible and it’s the best way to be reminded of God’s faithfulness and greatness.
