A classmate asked me once what should be the requirement for a Biblical husband. I responded by answering, check Daniel 1:4.Read it until you know it’s time to stop. It’s best to read it aloud too.

young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace.

See that?

Young men – meaning young.
Without physical defect – no pimples or scars!
handsome – good appearance!
showing aptitude for every kind of learning – high IQ!
well informed – updated in books and the news!
quick to understand – someone who can understand
qualified to serve in the king’s palace – passed the board exams! hahaha!

Kidding aside, I got a lot of friends who are considering marriage and personally, what gauge do we have in measuring a person is ready for tying the knot? What is our standard when it comes to getting a life time partner? I’m so grateful for this list given by our teacher.

Some biblical characteristics that a future husband is to demonstrate in their life – OR – these qualities should be evidenced to some degree before marriage in order to be a Biblical husband. These qualities do not appear automatically when one says “I DO”. A man who is seeking a biblical wife should be seeking to grow in these areas before he is married.

Prov. 15:5                    Able to receive instruction
12:10; 14:12                Has regard for others
12:27                           A worker
12:14; 13:5                  Uses kind words (for all)
14:6                             Departs from evil (especially in bad situations)
14:30                           Does not envy
15:18; 16:27                Does not stir up strife
16:3; 20:22                  Confidence in God’s control (especially in bad situations)
23:13                           Repents of sin
19:1; 20:7                    Man of integrity (one who keeps his word)
19:11                           Keeps cool in heated moments
19:26; 20:30                Respects his parents
20:1; 23:20                  Not a drinker
20:4                             Plans for future by working (not hoping for get-rich schemes)
21:26                           A giver (generous)
27:17                           Other people are better for knowing this individual

Eph. 5:25                     Provides spiritual leadership; sacrifices for you so that you will be a better person

Titus 1:5-9                   should demonstrate spiritual qualities listed here!
1 Tim. 3:1-13

My prayer is that this won’t be just a list, but rather, that my character would be Christ – like. Work on the areas that you need to work on, and ultimately, learn the art of surrendering, for it is only when we lay ourselves at the cross, when Christ can fully work in us.
