When to quit…

People are always ready to encourage you to give up. Life is too difficult, they say, life is not fair. It hurts too much. But such advice takes into account the omnipotent hand of God. Even though we may not understand why painful and discouraging events happen in our lives, we have the assurance that God has his reasons. Good reasons. Don’t allow anyone to talk you into quitting even though there will be trials. Time after time, you can have the confidence that God is still in control. Don’t quit. Trust Him and keep on going. The day will come when you’ll be glad you did. When you give up on yourself you give up on God.

This was a text message from a pastor to one of those who delivered a eulogy in the wake of the Special Action Force of the Philippine Police, butchered in Maguindanao. It was just so easy to be demoralized because of the death, 44 policemen, all commandos, and it was even easier to quit and let the enemy win the fight.

I was wondering, how about in the Christian life? When we are faced with defeat, will we quit?

Read: Acts 14

Studying the life of the Apostle Paul, he was someone who would not quit. He would go from town to town, even if it would be so risky to a point it almost killed him, but his passion of making Christ known was evident. He would stay for days, sometimes years, in a place and train leaders (or disciples) before moving to the next town. He just would not quit. Even at the end of his life, he was still fighting for the gospel’s cause.

What about us? What are we fighting for? Are we passionate about God and his kingdom? Or are we, going to fade in oblivion and just call it quits?
