Eyes on Jesus

“Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” 1 Corinthians 9:25 NIV

Paul compares our Christian life to that of an athlete who trains hard for him/her to win a crown or, nowadays, a medal/trophy and fame. Just imagine all the prestige and importance that is placed on athletes in our modern world. But, oftentimes, we also hear of problems in their personal lives — doping (using drugs to enhance their performance), marital issues, suicide — and we see that they are unhappy. It made me realize that these people who seemingly have everything they need and want don’t really have everything they need and want. And I think it’s because they placed their highest priority on the wrong things instead of focusing their eyes on Jesus.

Our victory in Jesus is not merely a ticket to get to heaven. Rather, it is a ticket to be with God Himself –to be able to worship Him for all eternity. That is why we ought to enjoy worshipping and spending time with God even while we are still here on earth because we’ll be praising the only One worthy of glory.
